You wouldn’t think being green fingered would pose so many dangers, but according to RoSPA, a charity, around 300,000 people a year, 110,000 of them children, are admitted to hospital after being hurt in the garden. Most of the accidents and injuries are caused by lawnmowers with an estimated 6,500 people hurt each year in the UK by either hand pushed or ride-on mowers. If there was ever a reason to switch to artificial grass, your own safety would be top of the list! No real grass means no need for a mower which means no chance of being injured by one.
Other common accidents that occur include tripping over or lifting flower pots and using shears, garden forks and hoses. And sorry guys, but statistics show that men have more accidents in the garden than women and along with children, you’re more likely to hurt yourself if you’re between 30-60 years old. RoSPA compiled a list of the top gardening injuries and you can have a look at the list below.
Top gardening injuries:
1. Lawn mowers (6,500 accidents in the UK each year)
2. Flower pots (5,300)
3. Secateurs and pruners (4,400)
4. Spades (3,600)
5. Electric hedge trimmers (3,100)
6. Plant tubs and troughs (2,800)
7. Shears (2,100)
8. Garden forks (2,000)
9. Hoses and sprinklers (1,900)
10. Garden canes and sticks (1,800)
Obviously this list doesn’t go into detail as to how and why these injuries occurred and every individual will have other contributing factors. But accidents can happen to anyone and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Installing artificial grass in your garden means you won’t have to trim, mow, cut or weed your lawn, minimising the risk of accident or injury.
We think for your own safety, it would be wise to switch to artificial grass – who knows what mishap may befall you as your potter around your garden?
